Worm farm adventure.

Composting worm farm

I grow vegetables along with marijuana and I am looking to be as self sufficient as possible. I am going to try a no till/live garden grow next with very little store bought nutrients and I want to have worms and maybe a praying mantis living in my tent as well. I bought worm feed for the worms I am going to put in my soil because I don’t want to use compost on my plants and maybe attract unwanted bugs. Once I have worm castings that will be prime and I also will collect worm tea. This setup costed me around 25 dollars at menards not including the drill and bits I had already purchased.

Day: 34

Simply worm. I ph’d this leachate to 6.5 and will strain it and use it on my little plant later as an experiment.

ClandestineWestOz Looks tasty mate lol

Some of the wormies were crawling around on top so I knew it was time to feed (usually they will all be sourced around my last feeding area, with none on top). I took screenshots from a video I made of me giving them this water-worm feed-banana smoothie that looks like something from a baby 🤮

ClandestineWestOz And here I was thinking worms eat dirt lol

genghis_quan They eat compost material along with dirt and poop out castings which is basically like poo soaked dirt which is the best fertilizer or plants and you can’t burn anything with it

Day: 2

This is the basics of my worm farm. This will be the last update until I start receiving worm tea or need to add the top tote. First picture: this is the smaller tote pictured in my previous posts that I drilled holes in for worms to transfer bins in the future, and also for liquid to drip to the juice bin (tote that is 3x deeper on the very bottom with a tap). Second picture: I expanded one brick of coco and it fit perfectly in the tote I used. This is the medium for your worms; you want it moist but not wet. Should be able to squeeze it and only get a drop or two of water. Third picture: I buried some fan leaves from defoliation, Brussels sprouts, kiwi. You want to change up where you bury every time you feed them (can be daily or a few times a week). Gonna let the worms get back to normal size so I’m starting by letting them eat small. You don’t want to use much citrus, onion, garlic, and NO dairy, meat, or house pet waste. 4th picture: is when I added my worms over top of the buried compost, they felt a little dry so I sprayed with some water. A lot of the moisture will come from the compost material so don’t ever over water your worms!

ClandestineWestOz Do the worms get fed? Or do they eat dirt? lol

genghis_quan Yeah in the third picture I mentioned what I fed them and what not to feed them somewhere in the post as well. Kitchen scraps work great and I also have some granular feed that I sprinkle on top. But I gave them a small bit of food and am letting them adapt to their new home before I really start feeding them like nuts. They lose 3/4 s of their size in shipping sometimes

Day: 1

Just got the worms in. A more comprehensive update was just posted as day 2

ClandestineWestOz Nice one mate. I can’t wait to see these guys in action.

Sandman Just recently learned about the value of worm farms. Excited to follow along and watch your progress! Best of luck to you!

genghis_quan Thanks so much! Had friends over and went rock climbing yesterday so I didn’t post a more extensive update! Going to now!

Day: 0

Just finished construction of what will serve as my worm farm. For those who don’t know about worm farms I will post about how they work once my worms and coco bricks come in.

Bassman I can't wait to see how this turns out 😁

genghis_quan Me neither 😅 worms won’t be in for about a week but I’m going to have it prepared by then. Going to cover the outside with stickers to block light. Gonna also get a small drill bit for the corners and edges so the worm juice can more easily drain to the bottom. I’m gonna do a notill/live soil grow when I move into my new house in a few months. Can’t fucking wait to say the least

Can we all agree I have the most pimped out worm farm ever? I drilled some tiny holes into the totes where the worms will be staying and also added tape to them to keep out light from the sides. Also taped the lid edge and bottom of the liquid catcher. A burlap bag will be placed on top of the coco/worms/ and compost mixture I have which will also keep the ambient light through the stickers out from the top. The ambient light coming through the stickers on the sides of the liquid container (bottom and biggest tote) will promote the worms to not hangout at the bottom of the bottom worm tote, and maybe falling into the liquid to drown and die. Worms don’t like light so I want them to be on top where the compost material will go but not on the bottom where the liquid is dropping. Wasn’t completely intentionally that it worked out this way as I didn’t think about the stickers being slightly transparent but it worked for the better, and more fun.

genghis_quan Worms should be here on the 22nd

ClandestineWestOz If I was a worm I’d love to hang out in a place like that!

genghis_quan I’m not even a worm and almost want to!
