Vegetating

Day: 14

Well I think she’s starting to stand up a bit…tricky part is knowing how much water to give the new roots without drowning them

Jimbo Norman Yeah she dead

Day: 12

Well it seemed like the root was basically fubar so I snipped her and stuck her back into the Q Plug…another seedling transplant…we’ll see how it goes.

jeannedark Ah, that seems interesting! I root for both of you! (Ba-dum tss for the bad pun)

Jimbo Norman

Jimbo Norman Ha - thanks! I don’t exactly have great expectations…just another experiment when I have nothing to lose 🤞

jeannedark That‘s the spirit 😁

Day: 11

Not looking good. Stem looks dead but this time my experiment is not to transplant but to see if the stem can come back from a drought…🤞

jeannedark Oh no 😕 My fingers are still crossed for your widow!

Jimbo Norman Thanks! Just posted an update - snipped her above the dead zone and put her back in the Q Plug to hopefully grow out the tap root like a cutting. We’ll see how it goes…

Day: 10

She was flopping over by the end of the day, unfortunately, so I propped her up last night. They were all leaning in the afternoon so my thought was that the sun was just beating down on them so much that the core roots were getting dried out while I was watering around them in a ring. I gave them all a little extra water in the afternoon but replenished the ring, not the base, so I guess that was fine for the other two but the Widow needed more water at her base? Dripped some water on her base last night when I propped her up but she’s still floppy this morning so not sure if she’ll recover. I guess the main lesson here is to remember the power of the sun when they’re this small - they def need a different approach to watering in the sun vs in the tent

Jimbo Norman I should really be misting the top of the soil a couple times a day on these hot days. The humidity drops pretty intensely in the middle of the day and that’s prob what was drying out the base

jeannedark Misting the soil sounds like a good plan, I might give that a go when it‘s really hot and dry. One nooby question: why do you water in a ring? I‘ve seen that a couple times now and am wondering what it does for the plant?

Jimbo Norman

Jimbo Norman It helps lead the roots outward toward the water so they effectively grow bigger, faster. Theory is that if you water the roots only where they are they 1) won’t need to grow as fast to reach more water and 2) you might drown them. Of course, I’m running into the opposite problem where I water in a ring too far out of reach and they start drying on me before reaching the water. Still figuring this out with every new grow…
