These things are going crazy. Literally just the build a soil 3.0 and water so far. Iā€™ve only had to fill the reservoir twice and Iā€™m letting it dry down for 24 hours like Jeremy does in the build a soil YouTube season 3. Iā€™ll be adding my first top dress of craft blend this weekend. Iā€™ll also be watering with aminos, root wise myco and some other goodies per their feed chart. Iā€™m not doing the ā€œall inā€ Iā€™m doing the basic and advanced supplements schedule off of the schedule.

apexpred Looks amazing. When I save up some $ I wanna try the earthbeds with all organic

Ok Iā€™m sold on mycorrhiza and aminos. Iā€™m also sold on build a soil and earth boxes.

GrNadeGrade šŸ’£

GrNadeGrade šŸ’£ Love BAS products, but their shipping cost is outrageous. My earth box is coming tomorrow. Was going to build my own earth box, but decided against it because storage totes arenā€™t rigid enough.

amithus

amithus Yeah I was thinking of building my own as well but in the end I figured Iā€™ll be using these things for quite a while so I bit and bought them. Iā€™m really happy I did. Good luck on your journey with them. Iā€™m very happy with the results so far. I donā€™t know if you watched BASā€™s season 3 where he went through the earth boxes and said once the plants hit the water reseviour they exploded in size but he wasnā€™t joking. As soon as these things got to a certain size they seem to be just going crazy.

GrNadeGrade šŸ’£

GrNadeGrade šŸ’£ šŸ˜‚ funny you mention BAS Season 3. Itā€™s probably my favorite season to go back and rewatch when I just started out. I actually watched that episode last night, hence why I chuckled šŸ¤

These earth boxes and the build a soil is crushing it. These things hold mid 30s in the ecowitt sensors and itā€™s been 3 days plus since I filled the reservoir. Once these ladies get bud enough for the cover then itā€™s really going to be awesome. I can tell they hit the bottom of the box, they exploded in size overnight. If youā€™re on the fence about these earth boxes, so far I canā€™t see any issues and itā€™s light years easier than those 3 gal pots in my first grow.

Scoo_B

Scoo_B Cool glad to to hear easier growing with less maintenance. There are sites out there for integration ā€œif this, do thatā€ that could possibly be helpful if looking to expand on ecowitt. (Example soil moistureā€¦ if ecowitt sensor = 25, turn reservoir pump on. Would need another commandā€¦ if ecowitt sensor 35, turn reservoir pump off).

Scoo_B

Scoo_B Reservoir pump could be on a simple smart plug

amithus

amithus Yeah Iā€™ve been looking how to use the ecowitt ecosystem.

Day: 25

The earth boxes got a watering last night and I filled the reservoir on all of them. I also put a gallon in the 10 gal fabric pot. The ecowitt sensors are reading 36% give or take a few percent depending on the sensor, so the bottom watering is working well.

I top watered again today but this time did the whole top of both earth boxes and the full top of the 10 gal. About 1.5 gal across the 3 containers. Wanted to encourage root spread and growth. I am for sure going to fill the earth box reservoirs as the transplant holes I made when repotting were about 2/3 of the way to the bottom screen. I will say that the myco inoculated plants from the beginning are for sure showing a size difference. When my first round finishes up and that goes to a photo period tent Iā€™ll do another test with cloned plants to justify the test but for now, my bro science is making me happy I did the immediate inoculation.

zollirum @amithus what is that green unit in the earth box?

BINAII

BINAII Those are Ecowitt moisture sensors

amithus

amithus Yeah they are ecowitt soil moisture sensors. Iā€™ve added a few pictures to this post so you can see how they work. If youā€™ve got the cash Iā€™d get them. They totally take the guess work out of watering.

Just watering from the top still. Iā€™ll probably fill the reservoirs this weekend and drench the 10 gal to minor runoff. I am blown away how much faster these are growing over my first run. The myco and bigger soil buffers are definitely the way to go. Compared to the same time last grow these things are really taking off.

LeChron James

LeChron James Whatā€™s your target moisture %?

amithus

amithus So Iā€™m watering when they got around 25%. If they are under 30% and I know itā€™s going to be a full work day the next day Iā€™ll water just to prevent a massive dry cycle. When I water I water to runoff and depending on if itā€™s higher on the moisture or lower Iā€™ll water to more or less runoff. They usually spike to 50% for about an hour after watering but fall too 45~42% after an hour or two. Usually takes 3 gal for this to happen between the four 3 gal pots. I try to water slowly with a wetting agent and my spray tank. I usually do 3 passes, the first is just to get the soil wet, the second is more and the third is to get it to run out the pot. Thereā€™s a saying in bonsai, the first watering is for the pot, the second is for the tree. Iā€™ve been doing that method for my bonsai trees for the last 7 years. Seems to hold true with cannabis. Iā€™m just so used to akadama where you can see the moisture levels. And I know root rot with fabric pots really isnā€™t an issue unless youā€™re completely drenching it but I did lose several trees in my past to watering issues so Iā€™m very anal about it. I killed one of my favorite tiger bark ficus trees about 3 years ago because of overwatering. It was 13 years old (bought at my bonsai society met up one year) and I was really bummed.

Day: 16

The transplant to earth boxes went well. Iā€™m following the build a soil season 3 auto flower method. Iā€™m using 3.0 soil. Only top watering until they get bigger. Ecowitt soil moisture sensors will and have been kept at 28-32%. I ran out of soil for the 10 gallon fabric pot so I filled the top with happy frog and top dressed with craft blend but only about 1/2 cup as 70% of the pot is build a soil 3.0. The plants by the watering pipe are the ones that has myco from the start but they all got it in the transplant hole upon planting in the earth boxes. Realizing this is no where near a good experiment I wanted to make sure they all got love. The one in the 10 gal pot was not one of the ones inoculated from the start.

apexpred For your vivosun tent. Can you dim each light seperate or are all have to be the same intensity

amithus

amithus If you daisy chain them with one controller no, you would need separate controllers for each one you wanted different however changing the light distance will do the same. Every inch PPFD drops a surprising amount.

amithus

amithus Oh yeah and if you buy earth boxes get the wheels. I didnā€™t think it was going to be as good as it is but yeah, totally worth it.

I have one VIVOSUN setup with all their stuff and my other is all AC Infinity with all their stuff. The VIVOSUN stuff is nice but the ac infinity stuff is definitely nicer. Most times when comparing side by side the difference is negligible but in this instance, the ac infinity I feel is worth the extra money. Not so much for the tent but the electronics, fans, lights and controller software. Being able to set VPD targets versus temp and humidity is a game changer. I built this vent thing out of foam insulation so when itā€™s -30 f outside it doesnā€™t get in. All the vents have back draft preventers and I covered the outside facing side in this black fabric so when you see it from the street itā€™s not completely obvious and nasty looking. Iā€™m not so much afraid of police because itā€™s legal here now but I just donā€™t want to piss the neighborhood off with reflective foam in my window. I love being able to mount the led inverter outside the tent to keep temperatures down. The AC infinity humidifiers are amazing pared with the controller and vent fan. It will kick on whatā€™s needed to get to my VPD target and with the weather swinging so much lately itā€™s been super nice. Iā€™ve had to stay on top of my VIVOSUN tent because you canā€™t do the VPD target with that and my equipment was not able to keep up with the humidity swings in that tent like the AC infinity stuff. In all itā€™s just nicer. I do however like the four individual led lights in my VIVOSUN tent as if you get some plants that are different height you can just raise that quadrant and your good to go. But the evo8 light from AC infinity is better on power. Iā€™ve got four of the 200 watt VIVOSUN lights in the one tent and the 730 watt AC infinity light in the other. The AC infinity is running way lower than the VIVOSUN and they are both at 60%. Calculations on the difference between 800 watts and 730 watts at 60% power should be about 7% but the Samsung EVO runs the new H series diodes and the difference is 17% at the wall.

Scoo_B

Scoo_B Nice write up bro & great job on the vent. What part did you use implementing for the back flow? Could always find/design vinyl decal to slap over the outside of window, even maybe poking a bunch of 1/8in holes where vent exits to help con seal them. Iā€™ll even suggest one fore yaā€¦ the leg lamp window decal from ā€œa Christmas storyā€. I to need to come up with something similar as far as incoming air. MN can definitely be unforgiving for long stretches. Wether itā€™s freeZing -30 for weeks in the winter or blazing hot all summer barely any rain, than a day or 2 itā€™s 50f in august, than rains 3 days straight then 90ā€™s in October (cancelled Twin Cities Marathonā€¦ Iā€™m not a runner). Hard to anticipate any regularity without huge swings. Gotta love the 4 seasons. I love this place tho.

amithus

amithus Yeah much love for our state. I could never live without the seasonal changes we get. I appreciate each one for sure. Thanks for the compliments. I used vent ā€œtake offsā€ to secure and air proof the vent to the foam insulation and aluminum duct tape to seal and secure it then put the fabric around the whole thing and used an exacto knife to cut out the holes. The black fabric made the vents stealth šŸ’Æ. Iā€™m using the ac infinity 8ā€ backdraft vent on the one and I got a 6ā€ no name one off Amazon for the other before I went down the AC infinity route. They attach to the take off coupler then the flexible duct attaches to the back draft dampers. If you look up ā€œvent backdraft damperā€ on Amazon it will pop up. I will say that the AC infinity ones are way over built and the other one I got is thinner but it totally does the job. The AC infinity ones are black powder coated too so they look nicer. I have them behind my screen still so I donā€™t get bugs when they are running low. Because I cut the foam 1/8ā€ larger than the window itā€™s in there tight and zero air comes in. When the vents are off the flap will close but my vents are never 100% off just to refresh the air. That leg lamp decal would rock though šŸ˜‚.

Scoo_B

Scoo_B Pretty soon those bugs will be frozen & dead, but ya those boxelder bugs & stink beatles (that look like there armed and ready to get it on but are completely harmless) are all over the place, mostly south facing walls). Bees are crazy right now too cause queens are getting into hibernation mode and not giving orders so workers are doing whatever they want aimlessly. LOL šŸ˜‚ Good thinking on the screenšŸ‘

Day: 14

10 days in the cups and I wanted to transplant. These are autos and I heard they can freak out if they root bind in their containers and work has been really busy so this weekend I had to go. The myco seedlings were throwing roots everywhere. Donā€™t worry about the clear cups, I put them into red solo cups to block the lights. I think I saw combatmedic or someone else in here do this and loved the idea. Totally stole it but it worked. Pics 1&2 are what the myco inoculated ones looked like, about 10% bigger above ground but the roots were crazy. Pics 3&4 are one of the non inoculated ones. Last pic is how they all looked when in this phase inside the solo cups. I know this really has zero scientific value because they arenā€™t clones and started from seeds and autoflowers. When I go to photos Iā€™ll do this with clones and really put some effort to it. I was so busy I forgot to get pics of the tap roots with the mycorrhizae on them but youā€™ll have to just trust me, or do it yourself and see. Caligrow has a video on this on his YouTube and he showed the process.

zer0applied

zer0applied Were you there when someone said it was worthless to do it before transplant?

amithus

amithus I get why they would say that as everyone thinks, including me, that roots were needed. But in hind sight itā€™s bacteria so it could survive or lay dormant until it comes into contact with roots. But yeah I backed your statement. All learning together thatā€™s for sure.

Day: 5

Seeds went into solo cups that had clear cups inside them so I could peak at the roots to gauge transplant time and what the effect of the myco was. I added mycorrhiza to the seeds that also had it added to the pre germination process. The tap roots had hairs on them so I guess the inoculation worked. Each pair got one with and one without this process. The bottom cups have the myco. I also setup my AC Infinity 5x5 with their new pro + 8 port controller, the evo8 730 watt light, a completely overkill 8ā€ online exhaust, two of the cloud forge humidifiers, two 6ā€ fans and one of their 9ā€ static fans at the top to move that air around. All is vented directly outside and the lung room is sealed except the closed doors gap between the hard floors. With both tents in the room Iā€™m just loling at how hard the door is to close because the vents are pulling so much air out.

Day: 0

I watched CaliGrow poop seeds with myco in the paper towel. I did this to half the seeds. Lightly wet in paper towels and into sealed ziplock bags. Total bro science here but the ones that had the myco on them popped and the tap roots were about a cm after 24 hours. The non myco ones were about 1-2mm. All seeds were soaked 24 hours before the paper towels.
